Amnesty International

Amnesty International is an international non profit organization that fights for the human rights of those who are in prison unjustly. This non profit organization was started in London in July 1961 by English lawyer Peter Benenson. He read a newspaper article about two students in Portugal who were imprisoned because they made a toast to liberty. Their motto is better light a candle than curse the darkness.

Since that time Amnesty International has raised the consciousness of people around the world. They help those imprisoned unjustly receive their human rights. Many prisoners around the world are being beaten or tortured because they are on the wrong side of the political fence. There are five key areas which Amnesty International deals with. They are women's rights, children's rights, ending torture and execution, rights of refugees and rights of prisoners of conscience. They take these rights seriously and sometimes they have drawn controversy for their actions. They have a done a lot of work in the former Soviet Union and in Turkey where they have been numerous human rights violations over the years.

In the1970s, two important people in the organization were Sean MacBride and Martin Ennals. They were involved in some high profile cases that brought attention to Amnesty International. Their membership grew from 15,000 in 1969 to 200,000 by 1979. Through their work, the United Nations issued guidelines in prisoner treatment and some other human rights issues. Today they have 2.2 million members and subscribers in more than 150 countries.



Oxfam

Oxfam is worldwide charity that assists those countries that are stricken with famine. They are working to find solutions to end poverty and injustice. They have organizations in 13 different countries that are working to provide food and supplies to famine stricken countries. The organization was started in 1942 in Oxford in Great Britain and was first called the Oxford Committee for Famine Relief. During World War II, they wanted to get food to the people of Greece who were suffering during the war.

Today Oxfam has expanded their role so that they have influence in over 100 countries. They are helping people to provide lasting solutions to poverty and injustice. They do a lot of work with poor people so that they can organize and gain opportunities to improve their livelihoods and govern their own lives. They teach and train people about issues such as AIDS and HIV. They have volunteers all over the world who work with leaders in the community to help improve the lives of those in need.

Oxfam International was founded in 1995 and they have impacted the world in a positive way. As there are many poor countries all over the world, there are many people in need. The volunteers at Oxfam do their best to help these people by providing food and resources to improve their lives. At the local level, many of these people are helping their own brothers and sisters to gain independence and personal freedom from poverty and injustice.

The Oxfams are working to become part of a movement, which is capable of global responses to global issues. They are aiming to create ways of working and structures appropriate to global action in a complex and closely-knit world. Oxfam is located in 13 countries which are Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Ireland, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Quebec, Spain and the United States. All of these countries are working hard to teach the poor in their midst to become more self sufficient and to decrease the occurrences of famine and poverty.



Campus Crusade for Christ International

Campus Crusade for Christ International was started in 1951 at the UCLA campus by Bill and Vonette Bright. The goal of the organization is bring people into a personal relationship with jesus christ as their personal lord and savior. This ministry believes in the four spiritual laws which were written by Bill Bright to teach others about the love of jesus christ. These four spiritual laws are that God love you and offers a wonderful plan for your life. Man is sinful and separated from God. Therefore, he cannot know and experience God's love and plan for his life. Jesus Christ is God's only provision for man's sin. Through him you can know and experience God's love and plan for your life. We must individually receive jesus christ as savior and lord then we can know and experience God's love and plan for our lives.

Today Campus Crusade for Christ has over 25,000 staff members in 191 countries. The current president is Steve Douglass. They empower people to know jesus christ as their personal lord and savior. In addition to the college campus, they also evangelize to others around the world and in our day to day lives. The team leaders work to train other volunteers to teach people about the great love that God has for each one of us.

According to USA Today, they are the largest evangelical organization in the United States. They are affiliated with Athletes in Action, Campus Ministry, FamilyLife, Josh McDowell Ministry, Student Venture and the Jesus Film Project. These ministries have reached many people who now know jesus christ as their personal lord and savior. They are winning souls to Christ.



Goodwill Industries

Goodwill Industries is one of the largest non profit providers of education and training and career services for people who are economically disadvantaged people. These people have disadvantages such as welfare dependency and homelessness and lack of education. These people also may have physical and mental and emotional disabilities.

Goodwill was started in 1902 in Boston by the Reverend Edgar Helms, a Methodist minister and social pioneer. He believed in a hand up, not a hand out. He accepted used goods and clothing from the wealthy families and had poor people repair them and put them in good order. These items were then resold or given to the poor. This model was successful and it launched this enterprise.

Today Goodwill Industries is made up of a 185 community based organization in the United States, Canada and 15 other countries. In 2006, the provided employment and training services to close to one million people. They have stores were people can buy items at a reduced cost. They can also accept donations of household items, clothes, books and other items. These items can be given to the poor or sold to generate income used to train and educate individuals.



John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts opened officially on September 8, 1971. Known as the Kennedy Center, it is located on the Potomac River and is near to the Lincoln Memorial. The roots of the Kennedy Center trace back to 1958 when President Dwight Eisenhower signed legislation creating a National Cultural Center. A site was picked out and then building began.

During his time in office, President Kennedy once said that "I am certain that after the dust of centuries has passed over our cities, we too will be remembered not for our victories or defeats in battle or in politics but for our contribution to the human spirit."

Today the Kennedy Center has three main venues which are the Concert Hall, Opera House and Eisenhower Theater. Since 1978, the Kennedy Center has honored five artists or groups for lifetime contributions to American culture and the performing arts, including dance, music, theater, opera, film and television. The Kennedy Center is known for hosting artistic and cultural program for the citizens of the country. Our nation benefits immensely from having these kinds of artistic and cultural programs.
